The Boss: When do I fire myself ?

When Donald Trump says you are fired, it looks very easy and practically funny for the watchers of the TV series "The apprentice". Before long the catch phrase "you are fired" became synonymous with bosses indiscriminately firing their employees with the catch phrase oozing from every corner of the board room to the common room. Well in most organizations the boss has the right to hire and fire right away especially when there is sufficient evidence of slothfulness or incompetence. That is when all things are equal or if policies of the organization allow those loopholes that the boss can capitalize to unilaterally fire a staff.Again it could be that the organization is a very small one that have not yet developed a sustainable robust HR. The above however, painted a gloomy picture of the helpless employees who their future can be quickly decided on the table of invincible boss on one hand and on another, a bigger picture of where a precocious boss has to go through the HR.to execute whatever grudges he has with any employee perhaps limiting himself to specific recommendations only. The question now is, is there gonna ever be a situation when the boss will like to "fire" himself. Fire might be a strange word, nobody including the CEOs would like to hear that, may be, we shall use this word "resign" or this phrase "step aside" shall we?.Yes they are much better terminologies, reluctantly acceptable by many. We have seen many CEO come and go, but who decides when they will actually go. Sometimes they are fired by the board,or asked to step aside or resign for some reasons like age and health. It might also be an end of tenure after completion of company rotational or leadership policy. So what happens if the boss has unlimited tenure leadership and no one has asked him to resign or step aside,is it possible he drops his head down and say yes I need to go, it is time I fired myself, this is it, this is the Rubicon a point of no return. At what point can he make those difficult decisions?. Let us not paint the whole scenario bad, because most often a CEO can decide to lay himself off for very good positive reasons especially when he allows his head to think more than his heart. In other words it is not all bad news whenever you hear that a CEO has resigned or about to resign,it might just be the beginning of a new dawn in that organization. Let us consider situations when a CEO can decide to go(all things being equal): 1.For strategic reasons (like merger etc) 2.When you think you are not good enough(telling yourself the inner truth). 3.If the org.has grown bigger than you. 4.When you run out of new ideas. 5.If you can identify better hand amongst your assistants. 6.For legal reasons(he might come back afterwards) Are you a CEO of any business and you are thinking about staying as long as possible to protect your integrity or your personality than to save your company and give it an opportunity for greater heights?. Common, consider the above listed reasons, you might be doing yourself and your company a great deal of help by resigning honorably and allowing someone more capable to take over. You have got a choice, is either you take a bow or you and your company will inevitably take a bow from the business world.
